The Snows of Serbia: A child-soldier in the Great War, Stevan Idjidovic Stevens

This is true life story of a young boy whose life is torn apart and changed foreverby events that are tearing apart and changing forever the world. It included the grueling retreat of nearly the entire serb army, plus many civilians, through foreign mountains to the sea. Told through the eyes of this young boy and based upon the actual journal kept by him there is a sense of the humanity and the instinct for survival that lies within us that has helped the human race survive the countless wars and disasters we have faced since the beginning.

Of those boys who were lucky enough to survive, many were sent to france and some to england where they were looked after in schools and universities. . During the great serbian retreat of the winter of 1915-1916, the entire serb army and most of the  male population over twelve years left serbia ahead of the combined invading armies german and austrian to the north and bulgarian from the east.

I found the historical detail about life in a small village on the banks of the sava river engaging. By the end of the book i had not only learned a great deal about a place and time i had not known but i also had gained a deeper insight into the human condition. Stevens emigrated after the war to the united states (hence the new surname stevens), where his widow and son-in-law later assembled and edited his memoirs into a fine, clear, fast-moving story.
